Why Read Beowulf? It's a great story, and it takes you places.
At this site you'll find some of the geographical places where my love of Beowulf has taken me. But Beowulf Country goes beyond those sites in the UK and Scandinavia where things like Anglo-Saxon treasure or Viking burial ships and swords can be found.
It now includes Hollywood, which has based three movies on it in the last eight years, schools and universities all over the world where the poem is studied, and hundreds of different editions, translations and adaptations including computer games and comic books.
These pages are for anyone studying or teaching this grand old Anglo-Saxon epic, and for those who (like me) just love it.
Are you looking for resources for an essay? Help yourself to my
translations and images -- but don't forget to credit your source!
This epic has been a passion of mine since I first read it in
translation as a teenager in 1957. I also love to breathe free air, and my quest for relevant images has just taken me on a great trip to four of the 10 most democratic countries in the world.
Welcome! Look around, have fun, leave a message. Come again -- I'll be
updating frequently.
